Squatting on Starbucks

The Church Street Community Action Group occupied this former jazz music club in the neighborhood where we are staying on Jan. 9.

They seized the building as squatters to block its demolition and replacement with a new building containing a Starbucks among other things. The move was part of the group's effort to slow down gentrification and the influx of chain stores that inevitably drive up property prices for everyone.

Sound familiar?

The squatters seem to be succeeding so far.

A flier hanging outside the building says that Starbucks on Jan. 31 withdrew its proposal to open a shop on the site. The groups says it won't vacate the property until the owner declares his new plans for the building.
